Brought in my grandfather's Seiko 5 for a full overhaul. It hadn't been opened since the 1980s and was running about four minutes slow per day. The work took six weeks — they kept me updated when they found a worn mainspring — and it came back running within about five seconds a day. The timing report was a nice touch.

My bracelet had been rattling for months — a couple of links had worn pins and one side of the clasp wasn't catching properly. They replaced the pins, adjusted the fit, and serviced the clasp. Collected it after three days. Feels solid again. Only reason not five stars is the wait to get an appointment was about two weeks.

First time using Tickwright. Came in for a cleaning on an ETA movement that was getting a bit sluggish in cold rooms. They inspected it, explained what they found clearly, and gave me a note at the end. Watch feels noticeably more responsive. Pricing was exactly what the website stated. Will be back for the overhaul in a few years.

I was nervous about handing over my father's vintage Tissot — it's quite sentimental. The staff were reassuring without being salesy about it. They tagged it properly and explained the intake process before I left. The overhaul took five weeks. It came back in a small bag with a handwritten service note. That kind of attention was unexpected and appreciated.

Finding a decent independent watchmaker in Bangkok took me a while. Tickwright was recommended by a colleague. The location is easy — near Ploenchit BTS. Brought two watches on separate visits, both for bracelet work. Consistent experience both times. Prices fair, work solid, turnaround fast.

Used the cleaning service for a watch I inherited that was dusty and a bit stiff in the crown. They cleaned it up nicely and noted that the crystal had a small chip I hadn't noticed. Didn't push me to replace it but flagged it in the service note. Good communication throughout. Would have given five stars but the wait for an appointment slot was a bit long.

Case Studies

A closer look at three jobs.

Challenge

Vintage Longines, no service in 40+ years

A 1970s Longines cal. 888 automatic, last serviced in Japan before the owner moved to Bangkok. Running erratically — sometimes 30 seconds fast, sometimes stopping mid-day. The rotor was also audibly grinding.

Solution

Full disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning. The worn rotor bearing was replaced. The mainspring showed fatigue and was also replaced — owner was informed and agreed before the part was ordered. Regulation took two passes to get the amplitude and rate stable.

Duration: 7 weeks

Outcome

Movement returned running +4 sec/day average across six positions — a substantial improvement on its condition at intake. The grinding noise was gone. Owner noted the watch had not run this consistently since he received it.

"I honestly wasn't sure it was saveable. Really pleased with the result." — C.L., Bangkok

Challenge

Steel bracelet too loose after weight change

A sports watch bracelet that had been resized by a previous repair shop — too many links removed, now too tight, clasp also no longer folding cleanly. Owner had sourced two additional links from a forum but wasn't comfortable fitting them.

Solution

Owner-supplied links were fitted and the bracelet was resized to a comfortable wrist size. The clasp fold mechanism was disassembled, the bent tab that was preventing clean closure was straightened, and the ratchet spring was replaced. All pins were checked for correct seating.

Duration: 2 working days

Outcome

Bracelet fitted correctly, clasp closing and releasing cleanly. Owner noted the fit was more comfortable than when the watch was new. Labour only was charged since the client provided the parts.

"Straightforward job done well. No drama, no upselling." — M.V., Bangkok
